The Spiritual Source

2007 by CL

This magic is used by the Chosen, those hand-picked by the Keepers to defend the balance of the entire world. Any non-magical planar race can be a Chosen and wield the Spiritual Source, which excludes Immortals, Dragons, and Fae. The Keepers would not pass this Source to those who are, by their very nature, magical because it would destroy the balance of magics that currently exists. An Arcanist who is Chosen loses the ability to draw on their own power, limiting them to that given by the Keepers.

Possibilities

Some of the most potent healing and dangerous death magic is that wielded by the Chosen. Their powers range from banishing undead souls back to their resting places, to raising the dead; healing the sick and injured to smiting their enemies with a bolt of lightning. Usually, the abilities of the Spiritual caster are dependent upon the Keeper that granted them. For example, a Chosen of Urunoa, Keeper of the Moons, would have dominion over emotions and fertility, making them wonderful guides for mothers and councilors for those in pain. A Chosen of Ruohr, Keeper of the Earth, would be able to call the very fires of the earth, and move boulders with nothing but a ‘please’.

The gifts of healing and banishing come from all but Vestarí, Keeper of the Wind, because her will is to create the undead and cause disease – very few of her minions are given the ability to heal. In some cases, a Chosen is able to draw on the power of more than one Keeper, though this is something that is generally reserved for global emergency, and the additional power fades after the event has passed.

Limitations

Gifts granted by the Keepers are limited by the Keepers themselves. Each Keeper has its own selection of Chosen, hand-picked to do their will. Those Chosen draw their powers from the Keepers themselves, which is the limitation. A Chosen of Urunoa cannot draw out the wind to cool them or blow down the enemy because that is not the power of the Moons. A Chosen of Syeste, Keeper of the First Sun, cannot cause a tidal wave or draw up the molten core of the earth, because those are the gifts of Mye and Ruohr.

Containment

Spiritual magic cannot be contained, though it can be used to create containers or potions.
